Safer Internet Day
Today, Tuesday 10th February 2026, we celebrate Safer Internet Day, an EU-wide initiative coordinated in Ireland by Webwise and Oide Technology in Education.
This year’s theme is “AI Aware: Safe, Smart and in Control.”
Safer Internet Day encourages children, parents, and schools to work together to help young people develop the skills and confidence to use technology safely and responsibly. With digital technology and AI now part of everyday life, it is important that children learn how to protect their privacy, think critically about online content, and make safe choices online.
Advice for Parents and Families:
Webwise, Ireland’s Internet Safety Awareness Centre, provides the following guidance for parents:
Talk regularly about online life
Take an interest in your child’s online activities. Ask about the games they play, apps they use, and who they interact with. Open conversations help children feel comfortable asking for help if they encounter a problem.
Help children develop critical thinking skills
Children need support to understand that not everything online is accurate or trustworthy. Safer Internet Day promotes helping young people learn to evaluate content, recognise bias, and make informed decisions online.
Learn about new technology, including AI
Webwise has developed new parent resources, including a Parent’s Guide to Generative AI, to help families understand both the opportunities and risks of emerging technologies.
Remind children to:
- Keep personal information private
- Treat others with kindness and respect online
- Tell a trusted adult if something online worries or upsets them
Webwise emphasises that parents, schools, and communities all play an important role in creating a safer internet. By working together, we can empower children to use technology positively and safely while developing lifelong digital skills.
Every year at Holy Family NS we have Internet Safety Talks. In October we had a visit from Ger Brick who put on a very insightful presentation to our pupils in 4th - 6th class. He also spoke to our parents on an online presentation.
