Engineers Week Tasks 2022

28th Mar 2022

Ms. Tuohy’s 5th class were very busy designing, creating and building during Engineers Week.

They were set the challenge to design and create a contraption that would keep an egg safe from a breaking, when dropped from a 6ft height. There was some very creative designs and a lot of excellent thinking behind each model. Thankfully, we had very few breakages and the ones that did not work were discussed in depth and a new solution was devised to ensure it would work if it was to be made again.

We also looked at the catapult as an object of interest and investigated what were the mechanics behind it working. We then set off in pairs to make our own triangular based catapult, as we discussed that a triangle is a very solid and strong base shape. People’s catapults varied in the arms length and tightness. We then tested out each catapult and had a competition to see whose catapult could shoot the furthest away. We also compared and contrasted the different catapults and provided reasoning as to why some of them covered a much greater distance than others.

A great week of fun, learning and most importantly teamwork was demonstrated by all and Engineers Week proved to be a great success!
